Hyderabad: Engineering colleges in the state might face a serious shortage of students this year. On the first day of web counselling, just about 24,000 students of the 30,000 top rank holders opted for colleges of their choice online. Interestingly, of the 1.2 lakh students who were already called for certificate verification, only about 80,000 students had come to the verification centers.

With 648 colleges that have 2.8 lakh seats, officials predict that about one lakh seats will have to remain vacant this year. On the first day of counselling about 40 colleges that does not have AICTE and state university clearance were not included in the list. The colleges could later be included once they get clearance, officials said.
Meanwhile, private college managements said that colleges in rural areas will be the most affected by the low turn out. “Several rural colleges will have to surrender their seats or will have to request the convenor to allow them to stop taking admissions,” said a management representative.
